You Must Be the Change You Wish to See In Your Home

It's my own adaptation of the quote by Gandhi about about embodying in yourself what you want to change in the world. But it seems to me, I can take this down to the very low level of what I want to see at home. I am forever arguing, cajoling, threatening my kids to clean their rooms and to keep them clean. As I was laboring to remove months (years?) worth of dust and clutter from my own room, it struck me that if I could only set the example for my kids, maybe they'd see in my room, what I want to see in theirs. Not a novel idea, I admit, but by applying the words, in the form of a favorite quote, motto or mantra, perhaps I can actual get what I'm looking for. Worst case, I have a clean room for a week and everything else remains the same; best case, I get what I want from the kids without having to argue, threaten or cajole. We'll see...

Weekend in Review

It was a long (9 day) holiday weekend since the kids had the first half of the week off for parent/teacher conferences. Here's what I remember of the week:

Monday - attended two conferences. Both kids are doing well.
- got my hair cut

Tuesday - attended High School Musical 3 with our friends. Consensus from the 9 and 6 year olds is that "The Boys are Back" is the favorite song.

Wednesday - Stayed in pjs until I had to bring J to her violin lesson. She agreed to commit to lessons in December before she decides if this is the teacher for her.

Thursday - watched the Macy's Day parade on TV. Joined friends for dinner.

Friday - hightailed it out of the house to get to the Seattle version of the Macy's parade. It's a bit of a hokey parade, but it's become tradition for us and the kids love it. HS bands, drill teams, dalmations and sheep dogs, funny cars and Santa - what's not to love?
- attempted to buy Frangos at Macy's but the lines were way too long.
- ditto on the Gingerbread House display at the Sheraton.
- went home and decorated our own gingerbread house

Saturday - attended an anatomy review session with four of my yoga classmates. Well worth the time. I might actually be getting this stuff - finally!

Sunday - assisted coaching an off-season soccer game with some of the girls from our team and the Cheetahs. M played, too. Muddy and lots of fun.
- took the kids to see the Superhero-themed gingerbread houses.
- went to Macy's and took Santa pictures.
- rode the Holiday carousel. No lines for any of these popular events!
- ate dinner at P.F. Chang's and finished it off with a fancy holiday hot cocoa.

Now school's back in session and we're starting a new week. Hope your weekend was fun.

I am the Moon...

You are The Moon

Hope, expectation, Bright promises.

The Moon is a card of magic and mystery - when prominent you know that nothing is as it seems, particularly when it concerns relationships. All logic is thrown out the window.

The Moon is all about visions and illusions, madness, genius and poetry. This is a card that has to do with sleep, and so with both dreams and nightmares. It is a scary card in that it warns that there might be hidden enemies, tricks and falsehoods. But it should also be remembered that this is a card of great creativity, of powerful magic, primal feelings and intuition. You may be going through a time of emotional and mental trial; if you have any past mental problems, you must be vigilant in taking your medication but avoid drugs or alcohol, as abuse of either will cause them irreparable damage. This time however, can also result in great creativity, psychic powers, visions and insight. You can and should trust your intuition.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

It's Official

I'm a student again. It's only been 20+ years, but I'm enrolled in Pacific Yoga's Teacher Training program. I bought books, I have homework and I have classes this weekend - Thursday and Friday evenings, then all day Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully, by April I'll be certified to teach. Who knows what'll happen after that. For now, I'm just figuring out how to fit this in along with getting the kids where they need to be and doing my volunteer work at their school. I've been pretty good about holding off all the volunteer requests I've been getting until I see what this training will require. I am nervous about being gone for entire weekends at a time. J will have to make sure they get to their soccer games, birthday parties, symphony performances and whatever else comes along. I hope he can do it. No, I'm sure he can do it, and maybe I'm having trouble relinquishing that control. Maybe just a little... But it will be good for all of us, right? Right.

This is something I've been putting off for a long time and figured I'd just procrastinate,..uh, I mean, wait.. one more year. When I'm not already my daughter's soccer coach and things are running a bit more smoothly (yeah, right). But the program will not be offered again for three years and I really like my teacher and I think this will be a good fit, so after some cajoling and convincing on the part of my husband and several friends I decided to go for it.

Now, I just have to memorize the names of all the bones and muscles, learn sanskrit and all the yoga poses, and figure out how to do them all, too. Wish me luck.

I Give Up

It's not enough that I spent too much money on fancy containers for my tomatoes.

Or that every September I swear I won't grow tomatoes again, yet every May I buy too many tomato plants.

Or that I've got vines full of big green tomatoes that won't ripen with all the cold, rainy weather we've had lately:

But this is what I woke up to Wednesday morning:

I think I'm done. Someone, please remind me of this next May.

Anyone have any recipes that use green tomatoes?

Amazing? Not so much. That being said, I've been thinking about doing the Danskin Triathlon for several years now, but never get around to it. Perhaps I should really do it this year! I was always worried about the swim, but since J's success with swim team has gotten me into the pool, perhaps I should just do it! The event just took place here yesterday, so I have until February to actually commit. And a whole year until the event. Check back here to see if I really do it!

Weekend Update

I am amazed that, when given the choice, my kids want to swim. This summer they've more or less (mostly more) swam every weekday. Yet, when asked "do you want to go to the pool or ride bikes?" they choose the pool. When asked "what do you want to do this afternoon?" they say "swim". I realize I may have fish rather than children - and isn't that what summer's supposed to be?

My daughter went to diving camp this past week. I thought it would help with her swim starts, which, frankly, looked like a puppy jumping into the water, limbs going in four separate directions. This was not swim starts, though. This was diving. From the diving board. She learned "pencil dives" - arms overhead, straight body. She learned "tuck dives" - arms overhead, jump while bringing hands to knees, then straightening her body. She was good at these feet-first dives. She liked them even though going off the board was a bit scary. Then she learned "falling dives" and "rainbow dives". These are the elementary dives where your hands go into the water first, followed by your head. Feet go in last. She did not like these dives. She could not force herself to keep her knees straight to do these dives. One day she was in tears after every attempt. And yet, I caught her practicing dives in the pool last week and again today. And she's decided to participate in part two of the diving camp this coming week. Go figure!

Today was the Northern Division finals. The four teams in the north half of the city - Ballard, Evans, Meadowbrook and Madison competed for slots in the All City Championship meet next week. The top 12 times go to All-City. J swam in her age group (8 & under) this week and did 25 medley and freestyle relays as well as 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke individual events. Her relay team came in 7th and 5th. She came in 5th in her freestyle heat and 1st in her backstroke heat, so she place 16th in free and 5th in back! I would've been proud of her if she was dead last in everything, but she was 1st in her heat. I am psyched! I'm not sure if she'll swim in All-City. I think we have to find out the times from the South Division. We'll see. As a whole, her team won the North division by 100 points. Wow!

ETA: J just got her ribbon - 5th overall in North division 8&u 25 backstroke. She placed 6th in the city, which means she'll be swimming in the All-City championship meet next Saturday.
Woo hoo!

Swim Team

My girl swam in her first swim meet tonight! She rocked even though she finished last in both her races. It was a huge snafu because she got put in the 12 & under group and was swimming against older girls. She discovered the problem early and was given the option to swim 8 & under or do relays as well as her events in 12 & under (no clue why 8 & under don't do relays). Then someone was missing in her relay, so it got scratched anyway. She got very confused by the whole thing and broke down a bit, but we got there super early, so she had plenty of time to pull herself together. I just can't say how proud I am of her. She really seems to like it, too. Much more than soccer, which I'm coaching this fall (eek!) But maybe, just maybe, swimming will be her thing.
